Beyond the Visual
Beyond the Visual: Multisensory Modes of Beholding Art, explores multisensory ways of beholding contemporary art, with a particular emphasis on modes that transcend a dependency upon sight. Edited by Ken Wilder and Aaron McPeake, the book was published in August 2025, and is free to download as an Open Access publication!
Beyond the Visual not only shifts the discussion on access and inclusivity – reconceiving access as integral to the creative process – but argues that this has the potential to enrich the experience of art for all beholders, moving beyond an often-unexamined reliance on vision.
Included in Part II of the book, is an essay from DisOrdinary Architecture on the topic of Architecture Beyond Sight - our project working with blind and partially sighted people to co-develop design methods beyond the visual. This has been written by Jos Boys, Poppy Levison, Duncan Meerding, Zoe Partington and Mandy Redvers-Rowe.
