Kampnagel is a performing arts theatre which deeply embeds disability arts into its programming. As part of an ongoing refurbishment and new build programme, Kampnagel asked The DisOrdinary Architecture Project to explore how to adapt and transform their spaces to be truly accessible.

For this project, DisOrdinary Architecture Co-Founder Jos Boys and disabled artist James Zatka-Haas ran experiential workshops with staff and members of the public to co-explore how foyer spaces might better support a diverse variety of bodies and minds. In the ‘Rest as Resistance’ workshop led by Jos, participants adapted spaces for lying down in public, whilst James’s workshop ‘Moving Elephants into Rooms’ focused in on how we accommodate others, and on how to do this more openly and with greater understanding.
